WHATEVER HAPPENED 2 DA EMCEES?
Whatever happened 2 da emcees?
That's my question of the day
I hear em talkin but they dont have shit to say...
Whatever happened 2 da emcees?
Who cared more about rockin' rhymes than a Rolex?
Who cared more about respect than da big checks
When it was all about da rhymes and not all about da beat
When biting was a crime & and ya needed originality to compete?
When did emcees become rappers? When did Hip-Hop become rap?
It wasn’t always that way, when did we fall for da corporate traps?
Remember when emcees rocked rhymes about good times to escape their reality?
Now wangsters live out gangsta fantasies for record sales,
I cant get with that mentality
When did being a pawn for the powers to be, get mistaken for keepin it real?
Confusin' our kids who can't tell what real from what reel to reel
It must be fun to fake and flex,
Does it matter, if is it real or Memorex?
When ya lies are supersized, ya push a Lex and ya single gets you sex
Whatever happened 2 da emcees?
Are they all too busy smokin trees?
Makin' videos full of hoes, rockin' rented rides and drinkin' Crys
With jew-els drippin, bling bling, baby, What part of the game is this?
Criminal minded, you’ve been blinded
Lookin' for that big pay day, but where's ya soul? You'll never find it!
No one ever disputed one of the greatest emcees ever is Rakim
But Nelly sold 1o million so rappers would much rather be him
Now everyone is a gangsta or at least pretends to be
Sure we loved NWA back in da days, but we also got knowledge from PE
We had Biz to make ya laugh and Kid and Play to make ya dance
Now all rappers sound the same and aint worth their large advance
Where oh where have our emcees gone?
Will we see anymore albums with more than just 2 good songs?
If the youth are our future, dare I ask, where will we be?
If we don’t make a change, Hip-Hop will be-come his-story
Hip-Hop needs a facelift, someone come save it, please
Once again I have to ask- Whatever happened 2 all da emcees?

Truer words could never have been said about the state of the emcees that are in the game right now. I remember a time when the message was clear and the white lines didn't blur the mind. The planet rocked to beat of it's own drum and had everything stayed on that level the industry would not find itself in this conundrum.
